Family Dentistry

Care for all ages

We provide care for the whole family. Good oral health is important from the first tooth coming in to maintaining dental function and excellent quality of life to the end.

Digital X-rays

As needed x-rays –
Our office uses digital radiography. This allows us to reduce radiation exposure by 80% compared to traditional dental X-rays. The film system we use is more comfortable than traditional X-rays and some digital X-ray systems. Although X-rays are needed for diagnosis and in many cases are the only means of diagnosis, we take only those X-rays we feel are necessary. We base that necessity on each patients’ current teeth conditions, age and past dental history. We always try to obtain X-rays from a previous office that are of diagnostic quality to minimize excess exposure.

Required regular X-ray machine checks and licensure –
Our x-rays machines are state of the art, less than 10 years old and have been inspected for safety and we maintain our annual licensure.

Recommended or required use of lead shields –
Before making radiographs, we will cover a patient from the neck to the knees with a lead-lined full-body apron. Although this type of protection was very important in the old days of high-scatter machines, today the lead aprons offer more peace of mind than actual protection because stray radiation from modern dental X-ray machines is almost nonexistent.

Pediatric Care:

Our staff is experienced in care for the youngest mouths. We recommend the first visit occur after the first tooth has erupted. Education for parents and children in dental care is important to us. We want our patients to never have a “bad experience” that will effect dental visits for their lifetime. We provide dental treatment in a friendly and communicative environment. We take pride in our young patients being excited about visiting the dentist.

Sealants

Sealants protect the grooved and pitted surfaces of the teeth, especially the chewing surfaces of back teeth where most cavities in children are found. Food and bacteria build up in these crevices, placing your child in danger of tooth decay. Even if your child brushes and flosses carefully, it is difficult—sometimes impossible—to clean the grooves and pits on certain teeth. Made of clear or white plastic, sealants are applied to the teeth to help keep them cavity-free.

Geriatric Care:

We value our aging clientele and make sure their care is exceptional. We understand that as we age, function and cost become top priorities. We consider all aspects of health in treating our mature patients including medical conditions and financial restrictions. We work with many Medicare insurance plans to be able to help our patients afford quality dental care.

Periodontal Therapy

A person’s periodontal (gum) health is vital to the overall health of that person. Periodontal disease is often a silent disease of the mouth and not discovered until a dental exam has been performed. It’s symptoms are usually not pain, but may be mouth odor, bleeding gums or loose teeth. Dr. Hwynn and our hygienists are trained to detect the presence of periodontal disease and are able to treat that disease using therapy that is conservative and effective. We also work closely with periodontal specialists when the disease requires a more aggresive approach.
